What might look like a simple stretch of curb is actually a critical early step in ensuring long-term durability, safety, and stormwater control for the entire site.
Building a Better Entry Point for Students and the Community
This project wasn’t just about pouring concrete. It was about preparing a heavily used area to serve multiple functions—from school drop-offs to game day parking. The location is uniquely positioned next to both the school grounds and a public baseball field, making it a shared-use space that sees plenty of foot and vehicle traffic throughout the year.
We worked with the school’s timeline to ensure our curb installation wouldn’t interfere with school operations or scheduled community events. It’s always a priority for us to coordinate with schools and municipalities to minimize disruption.
Laying the Groundwork—Literally
The photo above captures the early stages of the transformation. You can see the freshly formed and poured curbing already taking shape, defining the edges of what will soon become paved parking surfaces.
Before paving can begin, proper site prep is everything.
The curbs help lock in the layout of the lot, control the flow of stormwater, and give contractors clear boundary lines for subsequent work. You’ll also notice the black silt fencing running along the edge of the grassy area—this is part of a responsible erosion control plan, which is especially important when working near schools and public parks.
Even though the asphalt hasn’t gone down yet, these curbs are setting the tone for a clean, durable finish that will serve the school and the surrounding community for years to come.
Challenges Met with Precision
Flat, open lots like this one come with their own set of challenges—especially when it comes to drainage. Our team took great care with grading and elevation to make sure everything slopes properly and avoids standing water once the project is complete.
We also had to work around tight logistics, including pedestrian access and keeping heavy equipment clear of the athletic fields.
Thanks to our team’s experience with school and municipal projects, we were able to keep everything on track and up to spec.
Ready for What’s Next
With the curbing in place, the parking lot is ready for the next phase—paving, striping, and final cleanup. We’re proud to play a part in upgrading local infrastructure in Prairie Village, KS, especially when it supports schools and public spaces that bring the community together.
